First Nations refinery plan gets mixed reaction

CBC News -- A proposal by Alberta First Nations to build and operate their own upgrader and refinery could be good news for gas stations and consumers, according to Canada's largest independent fuel supplier.
-----
"More supply and more supply options should help all of us when there is a shortage and prevent out-of-fuel situations," said Ken Grandin, a spokesman for Parkland Income Fund.
-----
"We had very few of those in the past couple of years, but, more refinery, more supply could help us and the market potentially in terms of pricing."
-----
The upgrader, which would carry a pricetag of more than $6 billion, would create thousands of much-needed jobs and economic development for Alberta's aboriginal people, said Eddy Makokis, Treaty Six grand chief.

At least Canada can build a refinery; the U.S. hasn't built one in years!

From the article, Depressed markets in North America have already resulted in Shell Canada stopping production at its refinery in Montreal, said John Skowronski of the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute.

But Makokis said most of the five billion litres of fuel the plant is expected to produce each year would be exported to growing markets like China and India."

Yeah, but do Alberta's aboriginal people want to work? That's the question. For thousands of years they haved just been hanging out at Old Crow Flats and Bluefish Caves They aren't use to a 9 to 5 job. Let alone swing and night shift work.

Where is the United States in this? I thought we were the world leaders. I guess that we are only world leaders in destroying our own economy. Look at the bunch we have as leaders!!!!!

Don't think this will save money if the refinery is profitable.

I'm glad they're hopeful, but if the US is any indication, it doesn't matter how much supply you have, gas prices at the pump will always go up

This should have started a long, long time ago. While bo was making those obscene, gouging, rape and pillage profits they could have financed a new refinery every quarter and only cut their obnoxious profits by 10%. Yes, less than 10% of those quarterly profits would have produced some state of the art refineries that would have easily cut costs and improved our position in the world market.

Yes the US should be building more. But, then again, we all know which group to blame for that roadblock.
