Chrysler draws praise for Clint Eastwood ad touting U.S. turnaround

The Detroit News By David Shepardson and Serena Maria Daniels -- Las Vegas— Chrysler Group aired a poignant Super Bowl ad that drew praises for pairing a Motor City turnaround to a U.S. economic rebound.

"The people of Detroit almost lost everything," said the two-minute Chrysler spot narrated by Clint Eastwood that featured autoworkers, an abandoned building and a city flag.

"We find a way through tough times … Detroit's showing it can be done. And what's true about them is true about all of us."

For a second year, Chrysler took a chance, skipping traditional auto marketing to focus on a broader message to generate buzz and stand out in a Super Bowl jammed with ads from a dozen automakers.

The halftime ad showed Eastwood talking about the challenges the United States faces — a follow-up to last year's "Born of Fire" ad that featured Eminem, seen mo

Chrysler could have done what Ford did...Not take our tax dollars to prop up a company that was poorly managed. When my business was failing, I didn't get any help. I had to figure it out myself. The auto unions are also to blame. They didn't want to take a pay cut. Well guess what? Nobody wants to take a pay cut, but you do what you have to.

Between Obama and his crooked labor unions, they should be ashamed of themselves. If you can't succeed on your own, then you should fail like any other company.

Great msg....if Chryco had truly 'toughed it out', but rather they took & still have US & Cdn taxpayers $'s. Not sure if paid off for US but it certainly looks better than the Chrysler situation here in Canada. I'll replace my Jeep with a Honda/Toyota/Hyundai that has more domestic sweat in it than Chryco ...thank you.

Whinocherous - [noun] an ancient specie known for it's loud and continuous bellyaching call that identifies its territory and its obsurdly rigid stance.

Last time I checked, Chrysler is an Italian company, with manufacturing plants in Canada and Mexico. Wonder if even 50% of their vehicles are made here.

I think they should have paid back ALL the moneies before sending a message like that. Oh! That's right, this is an election year and we want a strong message like this to keep incumbents in office. Now I don't like it.

Great ad, good message, but its a shame that Chrysler, like GM, had to use government money to survive. Does anyone think it is curious that Ford, the only one of the big 3 NOT to take government money, DID NOT advertise during the Super Bowl?

I am proud an American company can come back but don't think they should be able to do it with government subsidies!!!

Yes, Chrysler is now an Italian-owned company that required government loans to survive. So what? It is still the most "American" of the Big 3 in terms of plant locations and workforce concentration. And it is showing signs of becoming a major success, which is good news for our economy. We should celebrate the progress they have made in the last three years.

It shows the grit of the American way of life. We can turn things around with a little help from the politicians. They need to start working together.

It was a nice ad, and good to see a car company not fully strutting their stuff! It's a shame that the company isn't American owned anymore. I guess I'll have to buy a Chevy instead!!!

We need consumer confidence. It's what, in part, led to decline in the first place. Say things long enough and people start believing.

Despite all the naysayers out there, if there hadn't been a bailout, we would no longer be manufacturing cars. The entire industry was saved............ and that's a fact.

It's good to have pride in the place where you live, but you can't mix truth and error. It doesn't work, example, Satan got kicked out of Heaven knowing all the truth he knew and tried to slip false teaching to the other Angelical Beings. Shame!

It is a lot easier to run a business and make a profit if you are getting interest-free operating capital and have the union in your pocket.

I like Clint in the commercial. Commercial itself isn't anything I am too impressed with. Would probably be better coming from a different company. About the only thing of Chrysler I'd consider is a Jeep. Ashame Jeep is linked to them, otherwise they'd probably have a halfway decent transmission.

Thing is Chrysler is no longer an American owned company! foreign owned! I don't buy foreign I buy USA! I support My family here not foreigners! Has Chrysler paid back its loans? Screw Clint Eastwood and the horse he rode in on!
