And all these gasoline (and diesel) price increases at the pump are happening as the price of crude oil futures drops back to near $80 a barrel... Oil companies and refiners have always stuck it to us this time of year, so why would they pass up another shot at it just because we are in a down economy?

The economy is damping prices now. If times were good, prices would be spiking.

yes capitalism beat the other alternatives, but the barriers of entry (and govt regulation) make some very large obstacles, along with a bigger bite of our paycheck.

"Spring time gas price increases are predicted," because why? Demand hasn't gone up. The answer: Greed.

Those Canadian prices are painful! I expect to be in Mississauga this August and I remember the pain paying 104. That was back when prices changed almost hourly and it was a Tuesday evening when the prices were lowest for the week. There was a small line of cars topping off at that price. Now I try to make sure I am topped up in New York before crossing into Canada and I try to conserve the week I am there.

Gas is going up mainly because of holding back on refining product and pure speculation. As usual the conserving public is getting screwed once again.

What exactly does basketball have to do with gasoline prices? I guess now they will try to use this as an excuse to further raise prices. Quit speculating, and I hope the speculators along with the investors go broke and oil and gas bottom out real low.

Hmmm. So he compares it to a NCAA marketing ploy.
Let's just find ways to use less oil. Drastically cutting the demand for oil is the only way to cut the rising price of oil.

We rant and rave, but that won't change anything. All we can do is to spend as little on gas as possible.

So you've got speculators who make money if they create a scare - they are in the same league as OPEC as scoundrels and the scum of the earth.
Hopefully the hurricane season will be benign, we'll see what happens. And unless you have your own gasoline storage facility, we are at the mercy of the market!

In the last week w have seen prices rise 15% from 2.69 to over 3.00 a gallon whole record surplusses exist. What's going on? Speculation must be taken out of the energy markets world wide.
